How to Find Out Who Owns a Domain Name
People buy domains for various purposes. Some use them for their websites, and sometimes it is for an investment purpose.
If you see any domain not active nor not being used, and you want to purchase that domain name, then you can contact the owner and inquire about the property. Even if it’s in use, you can make offer to the domain owner.
In these cases, owners may ask a hefty price of their domains as compared to the new domain name that no one owns yet. But if you really need the domain, you can bargain. And for this reason, you should know who owns the domain and how to contact them.
How to Find Out Who Owns a Domain Name
Step One: Visit the Website
In most cases, people buy domain names for investment purposes solely. In these cases, it is relatively easy to contact them. You will find “for sale” labels on such domains along with contact information or forms that you can fill and reach out to them.
Similarly, if the website is working, you can view the “contact us page” or “about us” page and contact the domain owners.
If these methods don’t work, don’t worry, there are some other ways as well to find out who owns the domain name.
Step Two: Visit the “WHOIS Directory”
Every time domain is sold or purchased, buyer is required to submit some basic info. In most cases, the contact details such as name, domain expiry, and email are mentioned in the WHOIS directory. This is for record purposes that who is the owner of the site.
Using the WHOIS directory is simple. Just Google it, and you will see the sites offering this service. Enter the domain name, and below you will see all the details available about the property. However, some owners don’t like to mention their contact info in the WHOIS directory, so if you don’t find the info, just move on to the next method.
Step Three: Contact the Domain Registrar
Nowadays, most domain registrars provide “domain name privacy.” In such cases, the domain owner’s contact info is not available on the WHOIS directory; instead domain registrar keeps the owner’s information. As compared to the WHOIS directory, this method is more reliable.
Visit the site of the domain registrar or Google the name, and look out for their contact details. You can also give the registrar a call or email them that you want to purchase the property. In most cases, the registrar will convey your message to the domain owner, along with your contact details. Or they will send you the owner’s contact info after obtaining approval from them.
